Jagatsinghpur: Today, Odisha Vigilance apprehended Sri Suryakanta Swain, Accountant, Office of the Block Education Officer (BEO), Kujanga, District Jagatsinghpur, while demanding and accepting a bribe of ₹5,000/- from a local teacher (Complainant). The bribe was solicited for processing the billing of a House Building Advance amounting to ₹1,50,000/-, which had already been sanctioned by the competent authority.
Despite the approval of the advance, Sri Swain deliberately delayed the billing process without justification and persistently demanded a bribe from the complainant. Left with no option, the teacher reported the matter to the Vigilance authorities.
Acting promptly on the complaint, Vigilance officials laid a trap and caught Sri Swain red-handed inside his office while accepting the bribe amount. The entire sum of ₹5,000/- was recovered from his exclusive possession and seized as evidence.
Following the trap, simultaneous searches are being conducted at two separate locations associated with Sri Swain to investigate assets disproportionate to known sources of income.
A case has been registered under Cuttack Vigilance P.S. Case No. 16/2025, U/s 7 of the Prevention of Corruption (Amendment) Act, 2018. Further investigation is underway.
