Bhubaneswar – Odisha is witnessing steady growth in small businesses, with credit demand in the state now exceeding the national average. This reflects the rise of grassroots entrepreneurship, as highlighted in the latest Small Business Spotlight report by CRIF High Mark and SIDBI. The trend underlines the role of timely and responsible microfinance in helping small entrepreneurs stabilise livelihoods and build long-term financial resilience.

Committed to serving underserved communities at the grassroots, Midland Microfin Ltd. continues to expand access to affordable credit, enabling individuals to convert skills into sustainable enterprises.

Kamala Sahoo’s journey in Bhubaneswar reflects this impact. A trained tailor with years of experience, Kamala had the skills to grow her business but limited access to capital restricted her ability to invest in her shop and scale operations. After approaching Midland Microfin Ltd., she received a loan of ₹40,000, which allowed her to purchase essential materials and strengthen the daily functioning of her tailoring unit.

With improved cash flow and more predictable income, Kamala has been able to contribute more consistently to household finances, improving overall financial security. The stability has also strengthened her confidence as a small business owner, enabling her to plan for the future with greater certainty.

Reflecting on her experience, Kamala said,“The loan helped me expand my tailoring work and earn more consistently. It has made a real difference to my work and my family’s stability.”

Kamala’s story highlights the role of responsible microfinance in supporting small enterprises and promoting self-reliance. Odisha remains among the top ten states in India by portfolio outstanding, with ₹17,630 crore currently deployed. By enabling timely access to credit and sustained engagement, microfinance institutions continue to play an important role in strengthening livelihoods, encouraging entrepreneurship, and contributing to the state’s broader economic progress.
