Kannada Actress Ranya Rao in DRI Custody for Gold Smuggling Probe
A Bengaluru special court has granted the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) three days’ custody of Kannada actress Ranya Rao, who was arrested on March 3 at Bengaluru International Airport for smuggling 14.2 kg of gold worth ₹12.86 crore.
Rao, 33, was caught with gold bars strapped to her body while traveling from Dubai. Her frequent international trips had raised suspicion among DRI officials. The agency sought her custody to investigate the source and destination of the smuggled gold, suspecting possible links to anti-national activities.
Despite filing a bail plea, the court deferred its decision, prioritizing the ongoing probe. Sources indicate that Rao is the stepdaughter of a senior DGP-rank IPS officer in Karnataka.
