Colombo: Prime Minister of India, Shri Narendra Modi, was accorded a ceremonial welcome by Sri Lankan President Anura Kumara Dissanayake at Independence Square in Colombo today. The welcome marks the commencement of the Prime Minister’s official visit to Sri Lanka, his first since the formation of the new government under President Dissanayake.

Prime Minister Modi arrived in Colombo on the night of April 4, 2025, for a weekend visit focused on advancing bilateral cooperation and signing several key agreements between the two nations. The visit takes place at the invitation of President Dissanayake and is the first visit by a foreign leader to Sri Lanka following the significant political transition in 2024, which brought the National People’s Power (NPP) alliance to power under the leadership of President Dissanayake.

This visit comes shortly after President Dissanayake’s own state visit to New Delhi in December 2024, which was his first official trip abroad following his electoral victory. During that visit, both nations issued a joint statement identifying core areas of collaboration, reflecting a renewed commitment to deepening ties in strategic, economic, cultural, and regional spheres.

The current visit underscores the importance of the India–Sri Lanka relationship and is expected to further enhance mutual understanding, economic partnership, and people-to-people connectivity between the two South Asian neighbors.
