New Delhi, August 5, 2025: The Supreme Court of India will hear on August 8 a petition seeking the restoration of statehood to Jammu and Kashmir, marking a significant development on the sixth anniversary of the abrogation of Article 370.

The matter was mentioned today by Senior Advocate Gopal Sankaranarayanan before a bench headed by Chief Justice of India B R Gavai and Justice K Vinod Chandran, who confirmed that the case remains listed for hearing on the scheduled date.

The plea urges the Centre to reinstate Jammu and Kashmir’s statehood, citing the region’s historical, cultural, and political identity, and the need for a robust federal framework to support its development.

The demand for statehood restoration has been a recurring call from political leaders and civil society in the region since the August 5, 2019 decision that revoked Jammu and Kashmir’s special status under Article 370 and bifurcated the erstwhile state into the Union Territories of Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh.

In December 2023, the Supreme Court upheld the constitutional validity of the Article 370 revocation but directed that assembly elections be held in the region by September 2024 and that statehood be restored “at the earliest.”

The upcoming hearing is expected to reignite discussions on federalism, governance, and the political future of Jammu and Kashmir.
