Smart Meter Sahi Hai: TPWODL Expands Transparency Drive to 300+ Gram Panchayats Across Western Odisha
Bhubaneswar, March 10, 2026: Continuing the Smart vs. Static Meter Comparison Display Initiative undertaken by Tata Power-led Odisha Discoms, TP Western Odisha Distribution Limited (TPWODL) has expanded its grassroots outreach by installing live smart meter demonstration units across more than 300 Gram Panchayats in Western Odisha, empowering over 1 Lakh+ residents through direct awareness and engagement.
The initiative brings transparency directly to rural communities by enabling consumers to observe smart meters and digital (static) meters operating side by side under identical electrical loads. These live demonstrations clearly show that both meters record the same electricity consumption, reinforcing that smart meters function on the same metering principles while offering added benefits such as real-time monitoring, enhanced accuracy and improved transparency.
TPWODL reiterated that smart meters do not increase or inflate electricity consumption. Electricity bills continue to be generated strictly on the basis of actual energy usage recorded by the meter, supported by robust automated validation and billing systems. The side-by-side comparison under identical load conditions further validates the consistency and reliability of smart metering technology.
By hosting these demonstrations at Gram Panchayat offices — trusted and accessible community spaces — TPWODL is ensuring that verified and authentic information reaches consumers at the grassroots. Local residents, including Sarpanches, Ward Members, Self-Help Group representatives, youth volunteers and members of the local media, are encouraged to visit and observe real-time readings and consumption behaviour.
Mahendra Jagdal of Chamapal Gram Panchayat, said, “The live demonstration at our Gram Panchayat has made the process transparent for everyone. People can see for themselves that smart meters record the same consumption as digital meters. It has cleared misconceptions and increased awareness.”
Every smart meter installed by TPWODL undergoes multiple layers of quality and accuracy checks prior to deployment. Manufactured and calibrated by reputed companies in line with applicable Indian standards, the meters are tested on fully automated test benches at NABL-accredited laboratories to ensure precision and reliability.
Commenting on the initiative, Mr. Parveen Verma, CEO, TPWODL, said: “Transparency and consumer trust remain central to our approach. By taking live smart meter demonstrations to Gram Panchayats, we are ensuring that consumers can directly see how their electricity consumption is measured. Smart meters enhance visibility and convenience. Our focus is on open engagement and building informed confidence at the grassroots.”
This village-level outreach builds on similar comparison display initiatives conducted by Tata Power-led Odisha Discoms, including TP Central Odisha Distribution Limited. Encouraged by positive consumer participation, TPWODL has extended the programme deeper into rural areas to ensure wider understanding and trust.
As part of its broader consumer engagement efforts, TPWODL has also organised over 500 Maitri Camps during the current financial year, benefiting more than 15,000 consumers. These camps promote awareness on timely payment rebates, safe and efficient energy usage, smart metering, and provide on-the-spot query resolution.
TPWODL remains committed to sustained community engagement through demonstrations, outreach programmes and awareness sessions, reinforcing transparency and strengthening consumer confidence across Western Odisha.
