SOA Surgeons Successfully Perform Rare Lung Cancer Surgery
Bhubaneswar, March 18: Surgeons at the Institute of Medical Sciences and SUM Hospital, faculty of medicine under Siksha ‘O’ Anusandhan (SOA) Deemed to be University, successfully performed a rare and complex surgery to remove a cancer-affected portion of the lung in a 45-year-old woman.
The patient, who had been suffering from persistent illness and coughing up blood, was initially misdiagnosed with tuberculosis at another hospital. Seeking further treatment, she approached the Department of Pulmonary Medicine at IMS and SUM Hospital, where Prof. (Dr.) Banani Jena and Prof. (Dr.) Rakhi Ludum diagnosed her with lung cancer. The patient was subsequently referred to the Onco Surgery department for specialized care.
Dr. Sunil Agrawal, Head of the Onco Surgery department, identified the case as Mucoepidermoid Cancer of the left main bronchus involving the left upper lobe bronchus — a rare condition affecting only one in 20 lakh people. The patient was counseled regarding the procedure before undergoing a complex five-hour surgery.
The surgical team, led by Dr. Agrawal, received guidance from Dr. Saravana Rajamanickam, a Surgical Oncologist specializing in lung cancer from the Thangam Cancer Center in Tamil Nadu. The procedure, known as ‘Sleeve Resection,’ involved the complete removal of the affected lung portion. Dr. Agrawal, who underwent advanced training in this specialized surgery in Shanghai, China, last year, credited the hospital’s high-end equipment for enabling the successful procedure.
Expressing gratitude, Dr. Agrawal acknowledged the continuous support and encouragement provided by SOA Founder President Prof. (Dr.) Manojranjan Nayak and Medical Superintendent Prof. (Dr.) Pusparaj Samantasinhar.
The patient was discharged seven days after the surgery and is recovering well. The surgical team included Dr. Santosh Singh (Professor, Critical Care), Dr. Saswat Pattnaik (Head, Anesthesia), Dr. Sudam Sarangi, Dr. Snehasish Pradhan, Dr. Amit Samal (all Associate Professors), and Dr. Shyam Hariharan (Assistant Professor, Onco Surgery).
