Bhubaneswar, August 26: To counter the challenges posed by Odisha’s intense monsoon season, the Tata Power-led Odisha Discoms have launched an extensive tree trimming and creeper removal drive across their license areas.

Part of the ongoing Project Clean-Up, the large-scale initiative aims to safeguard electricity infrastructure, improve supply reliability, and ensure public safety. Odisha’s tropical climate, marked by heavy rainfall and fertile soil, leads to rapid vegetation growth multiple times during the monsoon.

This unchecked growth often disrupts networks, causing power outages, transient tripping, and damage to poles and transformers.

In addition to affecting the network, dense vegetation significantly hampers day-to-day maintenance and network surveillance work. Overgrown branches and creepers obstruct access, making it difficult for maintenance staff to reach all parts of the infrastructure. This not only delays essential inspection and repair work but also poses a serious safety hazard to field personnel.

The special drive is being undertaken on a war footing, with particular focus on clearing vegetation around distribution transformers and overhead lines. So far, over 1 lakh+ actions have been taken across 40,000+ key locations in the license areas. Trained personnel equipped with modern tools and protective gear are executing the exercise in strict adherence to environmental and safety norms.

This operation has already improved line visibility and significantly reduced the risk of vegetation-related electrical faults. The Tata Power-led Odisha Discoms plan to continue such drives periodically, supported by enhanced monitoring and advanced equipment, to ensure uninterrupted and safe electricity supply to customers.

Odisha’s greenery is its pride, but unchecked monsoon vegetation growth can endanger power infrastructure. The de-vegetation drive is a proactive measure to protect assets and keep customers safe and connected.
