Mumbai, October 16, 2025: Tata Steel has been awarded the World Steel Association (worldsteel) Safety and Health Excellence Recognition 2025 in the category of Process Safety Management for its project titled “Preventing Loss of Containment of Hot Metal through Safety Instrumented System in Rail-based Hot Metal Transport”.

The World Steel Association (worldsteel) recognises exemplary safety and health practices among its member companies. This year, five initiatives across the globe were selected, spanning categories including safety culture, occupational safety, occupational health, and process safety.

Rajiv Mangal, Vice President – Safety, Health & Sustainability, Tata Steel, said: “This recognition from worldsteel is a proud moment for all of us at Tata Steel. It reflects our steadfast commitment to strengthening process safety systems and embedding barrier-based risk management across our operations. This initiative demonstrates how innovation, automation, and workforce collaboration can together eliminate high-risk scenarios to create a safer workplace.”

Tata Steel’s winning project addresses one of the high-risk operational scenarios in an integrated steel plant – the potential derailment of torpedo ladle cars carrying molten iron, which could lead to catastrophic hot metal–water explosions.

The Company developed and implemented a first-of-its-kind Safety Instrumented System across its 62-km internal rail network. This innovative system integrates proximity and optical sensors with an automated logic controller to eliminate human error during track switching – the primary cause of derailments. The solution proactively verifies track alignment and automatically prevents incorrect route settings, ensuring the safe and reliable movement of molten metal carriers.

This recognition marks the third consecutive year that Tata Steel has been acknowledged by worldsteel, reaffirming its position as the only Indian steel producer to consistently receive this global distinction for excellence in process safety management.
