World Heart Day observed by Shanti Memorial Hospital

Cuttack: Knowing about the organs of our body, their functions and how to protect them has become essential for all of us under this lifestyle changing challenges. When it comes to an organ like heart, it becomes even more important  to know about it and use it in a way that would give us a healthy life. Observing World Heart Day is not only a programme to create awareness but it is a strong reminder to all of us to know about heart and the things we should practice to protect our most vital organ. This year, appropriately the theme is therefore – Use heart – For Action, i.e. to aware and encourage people to take care of the heart with different activates like exercise, less consumption of salt, regular heart check-up, avoiding smoking and alcohol, taking healthy diet for a healthy heart.

With the changing life style, the human work life balance has been observed to be getting imbalanced day by day and creating stress amongst people. Apart, it has been observed, people opting for imbalanced diet due to fast and sedentary life style. Advanced gadgets making people lazy. All these factors have impacted life style and creating space for diseases affecting heart. With the study and findings, World Heart Federation had decided to observe World Heart Day to create awareness amongst people that informs people around the globe that cardio vascular disease, including heart disease and stroke, is the world’s leading cause of death claiming around 19 million lives each year, and highlights the actions that individuals can take to prevent and control cardio vascular disease.

In line with the objective, World Heart Day was celebrated at Shanti Memorial Hospital, Cuttack on 28th & 29th September 2023. On 28th in an in-house seminar addressed by Dr. Priyadarshi Tripathy, Consultant Cardiologist and Prof. Dr. Gandharba Ray, Medicine specialist, urged all to educate people that by controlling risk factors like smoking cessation, regular physical activity, healthy eating and managing stress., 80% of premature deaths from heart disease and stroke could be avoided.

On 29th September, to create awareness amongst people, a morning walkathon was conducted by the hospital from Shanti Memorial Hospital, Cuttack that covered major routes of Cuttack city with awareness plaques by many eminent cardiologists, cine-stars, doctors, nurses and paramedics and employees of Shanti Memorial Hospital. Before the event, quoting about the celebration, Dr. Priyadarsi Tripathy, Consultant Cardiologist, Prof. Dr. Mrutyunjay Behera- eminent cardiologist, Prof. dr. Gandharba Ray – eminent Medicine specialist, Dr. Avijit Prusty – Emergency Medicine, Dr. Raja Ghose- Clinical Pathology addressed the gathering where they mentioned that, observance of the day was a global campaign by which individuals, families, communities, and governments around the world participate in activities to take charge of their heart health and that of others. They highlighted, through this awareness campaign how the World Heart Federation unites people from all countries and backgrounds in the fight against the cardio vascular disease burden and inspires and drives international action to encourage heart-healthy living across the world.  Renowned cine-star Shri Sritam Dash whose presence brought much enthusiasm,  encouraged all to follow guidelines for healthy heart.

The programme was designed by Prof. Dr. Rekha Das, Executive Director and guided by and Dr. Sreejoy Patnaik, Managing Director. Key Officers namely Mr. Pramod Pani- Head- Human Resource, Mr. Pratap Behera – Marketing Manager, Mr. Deepak Mallick conducted the programme and lead the walkathon.
