Bhubaneswar/Kalarabank: Demonstrating its commitment to providing advanced treatment in rural Odisha, doctors at the KIMS Rural Hospital in Kalarabank under Cuttack district have successfully performed a breast cancer surgery on a financially disadvantaged woman.
The patient, a 55-year-old from Saiporuan village, was admitted to the hospital with cancer of the left breast. According to Dr. V. K. Sengupta, she had been unable to undergo treatment at government or private hospitals in Cuttack or Bhubaneswar because of financial hardship and the lack of family support.
Keeping her circumstances in mind, the medical team at KIMS Rural Hospital carried out the breast cancer surgery on June 25 at a highly subsidised cost. The patient made a good recovery after the operation recently and is leading a normal life.
Dr. Sengupta said the successful surgery was made possible because of the advanced surgical equipment and infrastructure available at the rural hospital. He credited the vision of KIIT and KIMS founder Dr. Achyuta Samanta for establishing quality healthcare facilities in his native village.
“Performing a major cancer surgery in a rural hospital like Kalarabank at such a low cost reflects our commitment to making specialised healthcare accessible to underserved communities,” Dr. Sengupta said.
He further stated that, to the best of his knowledge, this could be the first successful major cancer surgery performed in a rural health setup in Odisha. He also recalled that the hospital had successfully conducted another breast cancer surgery about a year ago, and that the patient continues to do well.
The achievement highlights the growing capability of KIMS Rural Hospital to provide specialised surgical care, reducing the need for patients from nearby villages to travel long distances for advanced treatment.
