In 2014, October 31 was officially designated as National Unity Day, or Rashtriya Ekta Diwas, as a testament to Patel’s legacy. The decision to observe Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel’s birth anniversary as National Unity Day was made in 2014. It was a visionary move by the Government of India, aimed at reaffirming our country’s intrinsic strength and ability to withstand the actual and potential threats to our unity and security.

The Home Ministry aptly expressed, “This day will be marked as a reminder of the strength of our nation and will highlight the resilience of our country towards dangers posed against our security, unity, and integrity.”

A towering symbol of India’s unity, the “Statue of Unity,” stands majestically on the banks of the Narmada River in Vadodara, Gujarat. Unveiled in 2018, this colossal monument pays homage to Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel’s vision and serves as a constant reminder of the power of unity.

Special Events This Year

Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid heartfelt tributes to Sardar Patel on this significant day, recognizing the indomitable spirit, visionary statesmanship, and extraordinary dedication that Patel brought to shaping the destiny of our nation.

As part of the festivities, the Department of Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities (DEPwD) organized the “Run for Unity” in Delhi, starting from Rajghat to Lal Quila. Around 600 citizens, including Divyangjans, participated in this run for national unity. The department, alongside its affiliated organizations, conducted various programs, including pledge-taking ceremonies and competitions like Rangoli, essay writing, and debates. These activities underscored the importance of unity and togetherness in India.
