Tata Power Odisha Discoms: Transforming Odisha into a 24×7 Power Hub
Tata Power, one of India’s largest integrated power companies, is revolutionizing power distribution in Odisha. Through its joint ventures with the Government of Odisha, Tata Power operates four Discoms—TP Central Odisha Distribution, TP Western Odisha Distribution, TP Southern Odisha Distribution, and TP Northern Odisha Distribution Limited serving over 9 million customers across the state.
TP Odisha Discoms are powering the state by delivering reliable electricity to both rural households and industrial hubs. Over the past 3–4 years, the company has invested over Rs. 4200 crores in infrastructure expansion and building a cyclone resilient network to provide reliable power supply to consumers across segments including domestic, industrial and agricultural.
Over 10 lakh new connections have been added, providing electricity to underserved rural areas and supporting industrial expansion.
These efforts have laid a solid foundation for Odisha’s development, with the state now enjoying 24×7 power supply. As a result, urban areas now experience an average of 23.68 hours of power supply daily, while rural areas receive 21.98 hours—both exceeding national averages.
Technology is the backbone of the discoms’ initiatives in Odisha. All discoms have integrated several information and operational technology including advanced systems to ensure seamless operations and rapid issue resolution. Some of these include: Centralized and area-specific power system control centres which enable real-time monitoring and remote control of the network, Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) and Geographical Information Systems (GIS) for network mapping and predictive maintenance, drone-based surveillance and LT protection systems to improve reliability and efficiency, SAP integration, smart meter installation, integrated call centre etc.
These measures have not only improved power availability but have also reduced Aggregate Transmission and Distribution (AT&C) losses to an average of 17.79% in FY24—a remarkable 11% reduction since privatization.
Beyond infrastructure investments, Tata Power’s Odisha Discoms are setting new benchmarks in customer service and operational excellence. Their focus on reliability and quality has earned national recognition- 3 Odisha Discoms achieved A+ ratings in the 12th Annual Integrated Rating and Ranking of Power Distribution Utilities (March 2024). Additionally, all 4 Discoms improved their standings in the Consumer Service Ratings of Discoms (CSRD) Report for FY’23, receiving an A rating for operational reliability.
The company’s efforts have significantly boosted Odisha’s growth by actively creating a skilled workforce and developing local vendors, enhancing their participation, and fostering a skilled workforce for the state’s power sector.
Over the last few years, the state has emerged as an industrial powerhouse, and one of the key industrial hubs in the country. Tata Power is aligned with government’s vision of Utkarsh Odisha, with focus on innovation, tech integration, skilling of its manpower, and wide scale electrification in rural area and industrial belts to support Make in Odisha.
It is also poised to play a pivotal role in providing round the clock power supply by harnessing Odisha’s vast solar energy potential, which exceeds 200 gigawatts (GW). This includes approximately 138 GW from ground-mounted systems and 33.5 GW from floating solar installations. The state can also support 10GW rooftop solar capacity. Tata Power has proven expertise in booth floating solar and rooftop solar.
