TPNODL HoTT Centres Deliver Transformative Impact across Northern Odisha through Skill Development and Technical Training
TP Northern Odisha Distribution Limited (TPNODL), a joint venture of Tata Power and the Government of Odisha, has made significant strides in employee development and community empowerment through its network of five fully operational Hands-on Technical Training (HoTT) Centres. Located in Baleswar, Betnoti, Joda, Rahanj (Bhadrak) and Panikoili (Jajpur), these centres are playing a transformative role in strengthening technical competencies across Northern Odisha.
These centres, established in each of TPNODL’s operational circles, offer an immersive and practical learning environment, combining theory with hands-on training in real-world electrical power systems. Equipped with modern infrastructure including switchgear workshops, transformer units, RMUs, CTs, PTs, LAs, SCADA systems and network simulators, the centres replicate real-life scenarios that help bridge the gap between classroom learning and fieldwork.
Since becoming fully operational, the centres have successfully trained 4,190 TPNODL and Business Associate (BA) employees, enhancing their skills in operation, maintenance, and safety. In Baleswar alone, 3,396 employees have been trained, with significant contributions from Betnoti (561) and Joda (233). While the Bhadrak and Jajpur centres were commissioned toward the end of the last financial year, they have already commenced training for Government ITI students under a strategic MoU with the state.
The eligibility for training at HoTT Centres currently includes TPNODL’s regular employees, Business Associate (BA) employees, and second-year Electrician Trade students from Government ITIs, as per an MoU with the Government of Odisha. Additionally, TPNODL customers are also considered for training programs. In the near future, the scope is expected to expand further to include Diploma and Engineering students, offering a broader platform for technical education and career preparedness across the region.
This initiative has also brought remarkable benefits to local youth, particularly students from Government Industrial Training Institutes (ITIs). A total of 351 Electrician Trade students—including 115 young women—have completed a structured 19-day hands-on skill development course, gaining exposure to live electrical systems and equipment in a safe, supervised environment. This not only enhances their employability but also builds confidence to pursue careers in the power sector.
The impact of these centres goes beyond skills training. They serve as incubators for safe work culture, innovation adoption and employee on boarding. By incorporating modules on behavioural safety, SCADA technology, GIS systems and automation, the HoTT Centres are fast tracking the readiness of new employees and upskilling the existing workforce in line with global standards.
For the youth of Odisha, especially from underrepresented and rural backgrounds, these centres represent a gateway to self-reliance and meaningful employment. TPNODL’s inclusive approach ensures that the benefits of development are widely shared, supporting not just individuals but also the broader economy.
As TPNODL continues to evolve with new technologies and growing energy demands, these centres will remain at the heart of its people-first strategy—ensuring that its workforce is equipped, empowered and future-ready.
